Fort Columbia: Battery 246 (North Entrance)
Chinook, United States
Much of the activity at Battery 246 (which was constructed in 1945) would have taken place underground. Generators, compressors, powder and shell storage, plotting room, and other areas were all protected under thick concrete and many feet of earth. Beginning in the 1960's the state prepared Battery 246 to serve as a temporary location for state government. As one of four emergency operating centers in the state the battery could shelter the governor and key officials in case of nuclear attack or other major disaster.
