A well stocked larder

Drymen, United Kingdom

For a bird flying into this wood is like taking a trip to the supermarket. Hidden in the bark, under leaves and on the ground are masses of insects and other invertebrates that form the diet of birds such as redstarts, wood warblers, woodpeckers and treecreepers. Oakwoods are home to a greater variety of plant and animal life than any other habitat in Britain. Such rich biodiversity takes a long time to develop.
