The Brendan Boat

Sixmilebridge, Ireland

This glass pavilion is to preserve steady humidity for Tim Severin's "Brendan Boat". Some call the boat a replica but it is rather an experimentally archeological reconstruction of a boat that could have been used by St. Brendan in 6th century if he was to discover the Blessed Lands, which he did according to the legend of Brendan the Navigator. Further, Tim Severin assumed that Brendan and his men sailed over Island and discovered Newfoundland. To prove that this was really possible in 6th century and that there might be some truth in the St. Brendan legend he used this very boat back in 1970' to sail from West Ireland, Kerry, to Newfoundland. Be sure to visit the St. Brendan Cross portal on the Dingle peninsula, that cross marks the place from where St. Brendan first glimpsed the Blessed Lands and decided to set sail, well according to the legend..
