Knockfierna Pre-Famine House

Ballingarry, Ireland

Ballingarry Commons at the feet of Knockfierna used to be a very thickly populated area in the 19th century largely because evicted families were moving onto the common land that was not held by any landlords and could be used communaly. This worked relatively well until the Potato Blight struck repeatedly in 1845, 1848, and 1849. This is a typical 1 room pre-famine shack, deserted between 1850s and 1900, rebuilt from ruins by the Knockfierna Memorial Societa in 1990s. Such a shack would be typically inhabited by a family of 7 (!) in 19th century. [very poor satelite imagery, exact coords: 52.47445, -8.81053]
