In 1770 a Rev Addie was appointed minister of nearby Kilmaronock's Church of Scotland. Many parishioners objected to this appoinment and, as a result, the Relief Church was constructed in 1772 (rebuilt later here in 1911). Peace finally occurred between the two churches in 1925.
