John William Grout was born July 25, 1843 in Worcester, Mass. Killed in Action at the Battle of Ball's Bluff, Leesburg, Virginia, October 21, 1861. His body was recovered on Nov 5, '61, after floating 35 miles down the Potomac to Washington gton, DC. His death inspired a poem which was later set to music; "The Vacant Chair".
