Built on a former racecourse, the aerodrome was operational from summer 1934. It was built by the Marquis of Londonderry who was a keen aviator. Still open for pleasure flights today and is also used by emergency services including the police helicopter and air ambulance. The airfield is also known for it's high quality airshows.
