<br> A party of Sumter's soldiers, harassing a rear guard of British foragers under Lord Rawdon (en route to relieve besieged Ninety Six), was ambushed several miles north of here on June 18, 1871. The state troops, under Col. Charles S. Myddelton, were dispersed and the British continued unimpeded to Ninety Six.
