Wind-thrown Trees Habitats are formed within stable forests by many influences including destructive events. This fallen Red Maple tree is the result of ground level wind sheer that exceeded the trees root support system The up-ended root shows how shallow and wide tree roots really are. Feeder-roots extend out to beyond the drip line of the sea trees leave canopy, but rarely deeper than 18 inches into the soil. As this tree decomposes through the action of bacteria. it will become home to invenebrates reptiles amphibians and small mammals. Eventually all that will remain will be a subtle pit and mound topography to the forest floor a feature typical of older undisturbed forests.
