Water In The San Luis Valley

Monte Vista, United States

It may appear lush, but the San Luis Valley is actually a high-elevation dessert--less than 7 inches of rain and snow fall here each year. Instead, snowpack runoff from the surrounding mountains supplies the valley's surface water and recharges underground aquifers. Farmers, ranchers, and wildlife managers use the water for crops, livestock, and wildlife habitat.
