Winton Wetland

Benalla, Australia

Lake Mokoan was created in 1971 as a water storage facility by flooding natural wetlands, including Winton and Green swamps as well as several smaller wetlands including Ashmeads, Humphries, Sadlers, Taminick, Black and Lindseys swamps. When at capacity, Lake Mokoan held 365,000 megalitres of water. Lake Mokoan was decommissioned as it had a long history of toxic blue green algae blooms, was under utilized, and lost over 50 gigalitres of water each year through evaporation. Now known as the Winton Wetlands Reserve officially established in August 2010.
