This Cairn has been erected by the Te Puna Quarry Park Society as a tribute to sir Edmund Hillary 1919 - 2008. He was a mountaineer, explorer, humanitarian and philanthropist devoting many years to assisting the Sherpa people of Nepal. He is most recognised however for being the first, with Tenzing Norgay to climb mount Everest in 1953
